At its meeting on 29th January Hereford City Council voted to support the “Preston Model” which has been adopted by a number of local authorities across the country to use its procurement of goods and services to support the local economy. The law requires Councils to demonstrate that they have obtained goods and services at a rate which gives value for money and they have accepted the most economically advantageous tender when offering contracts. Depending on the size of the contract it is often possible to indicate a preference for local suppliers because of improved delivery times, better follow up service and accountability.

In adopting the policy, the City Council urges other parish councils to continue and develop their practice of engaging with local suppliers whenever possible and cost effective and asks Herefordshire Council to consider how it can best use its purchasing power to stimulate the local economy.
