From time to time the Council awards Mayor’s Commendations to individuals or organisations that have made a special and important contribution to the City. The criteria are quite broad and each proposal is judged on its merits against the standards set by previous awards.
Any member of council can suggest an award. Firstly they are debated in a confidential meeting of the Governance and Procedures Committee, and if recommended are confirmed in a closed session of the Council Meeting. If the award is agreed we contact the person or group to see if they will accept it. If they will, we arrange either a presentation in the Parlour by the Mayor, or at the Annual Parish Meeting. We can sometimes arrange to present them at an appropriate meeting of another body if that would be more appropriate.
