Hereford City Council
Allotments
The Council owns ten allotment sites around the City, and we have recently extended our Drybridge allotment with an extra parcel of land acquired from Herefordshire Council.
Allotments are the only service the parish council can be compelled to provide if the Annual Parish Meeting passes a resolution demanding them. In any case we are very happy to be able to provide allotments.
Although the Council owns the sites the allotments are operated by the Hereford Allotments and Leisure Gardeners who deal with all the membership details, collect plot rents and generally manage the sites. The Council pays for ground maintenance such as grass cutting, pest control to deal with rats and mice where necessary and a twice yearly pruning of hedges. The Council also gives the Hereford Allotments and Leisure Gardeners a grant to help cover costs, in addition to the income they get from renting plots to members.
The Council and the Hereford Allotments and Leisure Gardeners are currently trying to resolve a long standing issue with flooding at the Rockfield allotment and have worked with Herefordshire Council, Balfour Beatty and Welsh Water to identify a solution. Once that is done we intend to give a long lease to the Hereford Allotments and Leisure Gardeners on all the sites which will enable them to apply for external funding, mainly from the EU, for which they have to have a long term interest in the land. The Council will continue to provide funds for supporting this activity after the lease is granted.
PLEASE NOTE
The Council does not deal with queries about renting a plot or complaints about allotments. These should go to the Hereford Allotments and Leisure Gardener’s Lettings Secretary, Derek Mumford on 01432 354957 or email dereksallotment51@gmail.com or visit the website here: www.herefordallotments.co.uk
